How to Take Care of Your Jewelry
Fashion is supposed to be timeless, but we know that is not always the case. Sometimes our clothes get frayed, stained, or worse, they mysteriously shrink in the dryer! Same with jewelry, even if we have utmost faith in the quality of our Sterling Silver Omani Jewelry pieces. Check out our last blog post for a more in- depth discussion on sterling silver if you haven't already done so.
There's really not much that we could do to turn back the hands of time and make your beloved sterling silver or fashion jewelry pieces feel brand new all the time. But there are ways to make sure they stay in good condition for a longer time. Keep in mind that our tips are not designed for precious gems and very high-end jewelry as commercial cleaning compounds that are on the market may be too harsh and can do more harm than good.
Our easiest to follow tip would be to make sure that you store each of your jewelry pieces separately in Ziploc bags. This can help avoid scratches as your necklaces won't jostle around with your earrings. Placing them in a hermetically sealed container also protects your jewelry against corrosion or rust as they can lose a fair bit of their shine and brilliance from exposure to air. The sulphur gases in our atmosphere is what tarnishes (discolors and darkens) metals including 925 Sterling Silver. Humidity can exacerbate this process, so throwing in a few silica gel packets inside your containers will help to keep them nice and dry.
Avoid getting your jewelry wet if possible, this would mean taking off your ring to wash your hands, and if possible, minimize the contact between your jewelry and products like lotions or perfumes. Keep your jewelry off your body until your skin is done absorbing your skin care products. After all, waiting until the last moment to put on jewelry is tantamount to carefully dabbing finishing touches on a masterful painting!
Truth be told, most of the time you are better off just wiping your jewelry instead of cleaning them. It sounds like a paradox but a simple pass with a soft chamois cloth after every use is much better than scrubbing with harsh abrasives and ending up with scratches and peeling away the metals off of your pieces. Porous gemstones such as the ones featured in many Omani Jewelry pieces like coral, onyx, pearl, amber, and in our Opal rings are very delicate and should never be washed. Extra care must be given with softer gemstones as the are more likely to be chipped and scratched so store them away from harder items, or keep them in separate padded boxes.
